Group Manager, Copy

As the first position of its kind at Slack, you will have a wealth of opportunity for growth and the opportunity to create change. This multifaceted role combines project management skills, your passion for mentoring people, and a keen eye for editorial excellence.

As the Group Manager for Copy, you’ll partner with writers and cross-functional leaders to spec out initiatives, assign resources, and see project goals are met. Along the way, you’ll guide writers’ careers, improve project strategy and process, and champion the Slack brand voice and tone. Oh, and of course you’ll monitor a few performance metrics to shape future copy projects.

Slack has a positive, diverse, and supportive culture—we look for people who are curious, inventive, and work to be a little better every single day. In our work together we aim to be smart, humble, hardworking and, above all, collaborative. If this sounds like a good fit for you, why not say hello?

What you will be doing

  • Guide and mentor copywriter career development, potentially in conjunction with the larger writers group at Slack. This includes creating and adapting career ladders for copywriters, facilitating internal and external training, and providing regular feedback. You will holistically guide the team to continue to grow and excel in their craft.
  • Encourage technical changes that will bolster, test, or improve copy performance across web, email, and brand.
  • Make data-driven decisions to help the team achieve exceptional goals. By consolidating copy performance data from Web, Performance Marketing, Social, and other teams, you will inform copy direction and highlight the value of copywriters’ work towards the company or departmental goals.
  • Create guidelines and specs detailing the team's deliverables. You will handle timelines and prioritization to set shared expectations and allow the team to prioritize critical work.
  • Contribute to various areas of the writing: ranging from content strategy to picking up project copy.
  • Advocate for the copywriter’s point of view. You will drive forward improvements to the style guide, voice and tone, and brand narrative as needed.

What you should have

  • 7 to 10+ years as a professional writer and/or editor (preferably both).
  • Proven leadership experience, especially leading other writers.
  • An appreciation for the value of data — both to quantify and highlight how excellent writing brings value to company projects and to elevate cross-functional partners’ understanding of the contributions made by the copy team.
  • Adaptability and agility to provide thoughtful input when projects change, timelines shift, or scopes vary. You have a strong knowledge of how to navigate change and the ability to help your team to mitigate issues as they arise.
  • Excellent time and project management skills.
  • You value creative quality; for yourself and for others while meeting company goals and aligning initiatives.
  • You are a dedicated and enthusiastic communicator and collaborator.
  • You actively invite feedback and give thoughtful, specific, and timely feedback.
  • You are a decent human being who is collaborative, humble, hardworking, and smart.
  • You found at least five ways this job listing could improve.
