An improved Google Drive app for Slack

As part of our ongoing efforts to improve the Slack experience, workspaces with the Google Drive app installed that have not yet upgraded will be automatically transitioned onto the latest version of the app.

What to expect

  • We’ll automatically update the legacy Google Drive app installed to your workspace on 15th March 2023. If you like, you can update before 15th March, or opt out if you don’t need to keep using Google Drive.
  • The latest app will ensure that members gain access to the full suite of functions available with the Google Drive app, but will not change the features that members are accustomed to.
  • After 15th March, only the latest Google Drive app will be available to install.

What’s new

When the latest Google Drive app is installed, you’ll see the following improvements:

  • Simpler scope permissions: The Google Drive app has been updated to ensure that the app only uses scopes that cover exactly what it needs to do.
  • Domain-wide authentication: An owner or admin can now authenticate the Google Drive app for all their members.
  • Org-wide installation: On Enterprise Grid, org owners can install the app at the org level so members will have access to Google Drive no matter which workspace they’re in, without needing to re-authenticate.

Update to the new version

If you’d like to start using the latest version of the Google Drive app before 15th March 2023, follow the steps below. This also means we will not automatically transition you over.

  1. From your desktop, click on  Apps at the top of the left sidebar. If you don’t see this option, click  More to find it.
  2. Search for and select Google Drive, then click on the About tab.
  3. Click on Configuration. You’ll be taken to the Slack App Directory.
  4. Click on Update Google Drive.
  5. Follow the prompts to install the app.

Opt out

If you don’t need to keep using Google Drive, uninstall the legacy app. Once the app is uninstalled, we’ll know not to automatically transition your workspace to the latest version.

FAQs

Will I still be able to use the legacy Google Drive app after 15th March 2023?
As of March 2023, the legacy Google Drive app will not be available. Anyone who opted out of the automatic transition will not be able to use the legacy version of Google Drive and will need to update their app to the newest version.

Will my members who have already authenticated their Google accounts need to take any action during the transition?
Nope. Google accounts that are currently connected will be unaffected, and Google Drive links will continue to unfurl before and after the transition.

Will Google Drive be installed to all my workspaces?
When the transition takes place, Google Drive will only be installed to workspaces that have the legacy service installed. On Grid, you’ll see that Google Drive start to work in all the workspaces in your org.
