Engineering Manager, Data Tools
Slack is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead the Data Tools Engineering team. This team builds the tools and platforms that fuels ecosystems around Data Visualization, Advanced Analytics tooling and creation of a Knowledge portal/ Data Mart for all users of data at Slack. We partner with product engineers, analysts, data scientists, other data users and contributors at Slack to optimize logging, provide a platform where they can create their dashboards, build tools to query data, etc. You will lead and scale this team to help empower usage of data at Slack.
We are looking for a leader who is product-focused, and passionate about crafting a strong data-driven culture within the company. You are independent and excited about having a huge impact at Slack. You are able to have a North Star vision for your product lines and a clear plan to execute towards that goal. In partnership with your peer functions, you will drive alignment and conversations with various teams within Slack. You will collaborate with key technical leaders towards defining and realizing the North Star goals of the team.
What you will be doing
- Leading, motivating and growing a highly diverse team
- Be customer obsessed, partnering closely with Advance Data Users (ADU), Analysts and Product teams to understand current and future data needs around Experiment and Advance analytics tools
- Steer the architecture efforts of our Data visualization, Analytics tooling and Knowledge portal/ Data mart ecosystem towards build a highly performant, scalable, resilient and reliable system
- Engage with Product managers and UX designers to revamp user experiences that may use frameworks like React
- Be execution focused on defining and then realizing the roadmap
- Lead teams in the micro services world; building services to tackle sophisticated and linearly scalable problems
- Partner and collaborate with teams across Slack on various feature rollouts and initiatives
- Help define processes and the engagement model for the team on Engineering excellence with focus on automation and Business as usual activities
- Find potential opportunities for building new tools to scale and provide self-service solutions
What you should have
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience
- At least 2 years in an engineering management role
- Familiarity working with Agile software development lifecycle
- Ability to weigh several and often conflicting constraints to make rapid decisions in a multifaceted and quickly-growing company
- Excellent communication skills including the ability to proactively identify data issues and drive to resolution
- You’ve built or utilized large-scale data pipelines expertly and have experience with Big data technologies like Airflow, Kafka, MapReduce, Hadoop, Spark and BI and Visualization tools
- You possess proven computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems
- When things break—and they will—you are eager and able to help fix things
