Director of Service Engineering

San Francisco

Slack is looking for an experienced engineering director to lead our Service Engineering organization to deliver our service to our customers reliably and cost-effectively.  This person will manage our Operations and Internal Tools teams and report to the Vice President of Engineering.

You will

  • Ensure availability of the Slack service to customers around the globe as well as development, test, build, and deploy, data exploration, and visibility infrastructure to fellow engineers and coworkers
  • Define a vision for the future delivery of the Slack service that balances reliability, operator efficiency, and cost
  • Be accountable for a rotation of on-call operators and developers
  • Manage, mentor, and grow the careers of engineering managers and individual contributors
  • Hire a diverse and exceptional team
  • Set strategic goals in partnership with the rest of engineering and deliver results on schedule
  • Budget and forecast AWS, GCP, and other operational costs
  • Help define and implement Slack’s security and compliance program
  • Represent Slack at industry events and promoting the Slack Engineering brand


  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience
  • History of engineering and operating highly-available web applications in the cloud
  • Experience managing a team of engineering managers
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to handle complexity
