Software Engineer - Desktop Automation

San Francisco

Slack’s Mac, Windows, and Linux apps are built with Electron, an open source framework that combines desktop and web technologies. Every single day millions of people depend on these apps to communicate and get work done. We are looking for a resourceful developer to improve our desktop QA and release automation systems, and help us ship high quality updates every week. This role will be the first automation engineer on Slack's desktop team.

You will be responsible for

  • Identifying automation opportunities and defining strategy
  • Building and maintaining test systems for Mac, Windows, and Linux
  • Defining proven methods and making it easier for everyone on the team to write tests
  • Producing quality and performance metrics
  • Coordinating with Slack’s Build & Release and Internal Tools teams to ensure our automation systems are fast, stable, and secure

Your typical week might include

  • Writing a Slack bot to automate deploying and monitoring new app releases
  • Setting up an overnight soak test, and using Chrome heap snapshots to report memory leaks
  • Researching ways to test unusual scenarios, like Windows 10 Action Center notifications
  • Working with QA and Product Management to define test plans for a new feature
  • Participating in team planning, and being an advocate for quality and efficiency

Things we think are important for this role

  • You have a tendency toward automating frequent tasks, and are proficient with multiple scripting languages
  • While you may not have worked on a cross-platform desktop app, your previous projects demonstrate that you are self-directed, and capable of taking on novel challenges
  • You get satisfaction from making everyone around you more productive
