Fair billing policy

We offer a fair billing policy because we believe you should only pay for members that are actively using Slack.

The short version

  • On the day you upgrade to a paid subscription, you’ll only be charged for active members.
  • If all members become inactive, you’ll be charged for a minimum of one member, unless you decide to downgrade to the free version of Slack.
  • Fair billing calculations and any changes to the number of active members in your workspace will be reflected in your billing statement.


Add new members to a paid workspace

If you’re on a paid subscription and add new members part of the way through the billing cycle, we’ll only charge for the time used. We’ll keep track of this for you, and bill you once per month (if you’re paying by credit card) or once per quarter (if paying by invoice).

Here’s an example:

Your workspace is on the Standard subscription and you’re paying monthly – £6.30 per member per month. You add a new member 10 days into your billing period and there are 20 days remaining in the month.

We calculate the pro-rata subscription cost by dividing the cost per member (£6.30) by the number of days in the month (30) and multiplying by the number of days remaining (20). This gives us the pro-rata subscription cost for the remainder of that billing period: £4.20

If you pay annually, we’ll calculate the pro-rata cost for the rest of the year and bill you at the end of the month for any new members added.

Paying by invoice? We invoice you for the full year for a set number of members. If your workspace grows larger than anticipated, we’ll send you an invoice once per calendar quarter to settle any outstanding balances.


Credit card charges

You’ll see the first credit card charge from Slack on the day you purchase a paid subscription. Here are some other times you’ll see charges:

  • On the monthly renewal date if your workspace is on a monthly payment schedule.
  • On the annual renewal date if your workspace is on an annual payment schedule.
  • On the last day of the month if your workspace is on an annual payment schedule and there is an outstanding balance from adding new members.


How inactive and deactivated accounts affect billing

Slack will automatically detect if members become inactive. If that happens, we’ll add pro-rata credit to your Slack account and it’ll be applied when new members are added to your workspace or on your next renewal date. This credit has no currency or exchange value, is non-transferable and non-refundable and will expire following the termination of your paid services subscription with Slack.

Here’s an example:

Your workspace is on the Standard subscription paying monthly – £6.30 per member per month. A member is deactivated 15 days into your billing period. 

We calculate your pro-rata credit amount by dividing the cost per member (£6.30) by the number of days in the month (30) and multiplying by the number of days that person used Slack during that billing period (15). This gives us the pro-rata credit amount: £3.15

Types of members

Workspace owners, workspace admins, members and multi-channel guests are paid members. You can invite as many of them to your workspace as you like. Visit our subscriptions page for more about costs.

For organisations using multiple Slack workspaces: A single individual can join more than one workspace. As long as they remain active in each workspace, they’ll be counted towards the total number of active members for all workspaces they’ve joined. This may result in your organisation being charged for the same person multiple times.

Bots, invited members and single-channel guests are free. When an invited member accepts their invitation and joins your workspace, they’ll be counted as an active member starting that day.
