Downgrading to a free workspace

When your trial of a paid subscription ends or you when downgrade from a paid subscription to a free workspace, your access to paid features will end and you’ll be subject to usage limits. Use the guide below to see which paid features your team will no longer have access to on the free subscription.

Organise projects

Customised sections

Custom sections allow members of your workspace to organise their channel and direct message (DM) list into sections that work best for them.

When you downgrade, the conversations that members of your workspace have organised into custom sections will be reorganised into one section for Channels, one section for DMs and a Starred section for conversations you star

Canvases

With canvases, you can create documents like project outlines, to-do lists and meeting agendas right in Slack, reducing the need for constant context switching.

When you downgrade, channel canvases will still be available on the free version of Slack, but any standalone canvas will be converted to read only and you won’t be able to create new ones. Browse the Canvases tab to view the canvases in your workspace you have access to, and remember that there may also be canvases in your workspace that haven’t been shared with you.

  1. Hover over   More, then click   Canvases.

  2. Use the Filter and Sort options to find what you need, or search for a specific canvas in the search bar.

Message history

Searching your entire message and file history allows you to review conversations where you’ve made decisions, shared important files or finalised specific details.

When you downgrade, you’ll be limited to your most recent 90 days of message and file history. Older conversations will be hidden until you upgrade, and you’ll need to spend time re-hashing details you’ve already deliberated on. For an overview of how many messages might be hidden by the limit, you can review your Analytics.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the sidebar.

Lead meetings

Group huddles

Group discussions for project kickoffs, or brainstorming sessions with the entire team happen at the click of a button with group huddles.

When you downgrade, you’ll be limited to one-to-one huddles in DMs.

Custom user groups

  1. From your desktop, hover over   More.

Workflow Builder

Workflows give your team time back, by taking step-based routine processes and automating them.

Your existing workflows will stop working when you downgrade, and you won’t be able to create new ones. Routine tasks will need to be completed by hand. Review the workflows your team uses regularly from the workflow dashboard.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the sidebar.

  2. Hover over Tools & settings, then click Manage workflows to open the Slack App Directory.

Apps and integrations

On the free version of Slack, you’ll be limited to 10 third-party or custom app installations. If you use more than this, you’ll need to uninstall some apps to make space for new ones. You can see how many, and which apps are installed on your workspace in the Slack App Directory.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
    9f8e6606-41aa-40cb-a5e7-15d9aefd048e
