Create multi-workspace channels on Enterprise Grid

In an Enterprise Grid organisation, multi-workspace channels connect workspaces together. For cross-functional groups who need to collaborate in Slack, this type of channel makes it possible. If you're an Org Owner or Admin or a member with permission to manage these channels, read on for more details.

Note: if these permissions don't apply to you, contact an Org Owner or Admin to perform the steps for you.

Understand multi-workspace channels

Get familiar with permissions and how to create and manage multi-workspace channels. We've outlined the basics below to help you get started.

Note: some apps and custom bots may not be available in a multi-workspace channel. Get in touch with us for more information.

Understand channel types

  • A multi-workspace channel can be public or private. 
  • These channels can also be org-wide, meaning they're discoverable by every member in the org and even set as a default channel for every person.

Set permissions 

Add a channel to other workspaces

  • Add any channel to other workspaces in the org, except for the #general channel.
  • Members will see the  linked circle icon next to a channel's name when it’s available in other workspaces.

Control channel access

Manage channel visibility

  • A multi-workspace channel can be public or private.
  • If public, the channel can be accessed by anyone in the org.
  • If it's private, it'll be limited to only the people you've added to that channel.

Create a multi-workspace channel

Step 1:  find or create your channel

  1. From your desktop, open Slack.
  2. Navigate to an existing channel, or create a new channel.

Step 2: add it to other workspaces

  1. Click the  cog icon to open the Channel settings menu.
  2. Click Additional options.
  3. Select Add to other workspaces.
  4. Decide who can access the channel and select Review changes.
  5. Click Save changes to finish.

Remove access to a multi-workspace channel

Should access to a channel need to change, you can update the workspaces it's available to. Here's how to remove a channel's access from the workspaces of your choosing:

  1. Click the  cog icon to open the Channel settings menu.
  2. Click Additional options.
  3. Choose Add to other workspaces.
  4. Select the workspaces that should no longer have access to the channel.
  5. Click Review changes.
  6. Select Save Changes to finish.

Note: multi-workspace channels can't be moved between workspaces — you'll need to remove other workspaces' access to them first.
