Manage link previews

When someone shares a link in Slack, others can see a text preview of the content. Owners and admins can adjust preview settings for websites, third-party files and third-party apps.
 

Turn off previews for specific websites

Workspace owners and admins can turn off link previews for specific websites.

  1. Hover over a link shared in the desktop app.
  2. Click the  close icon in the top left to remove the preview.
  3. Tick the box next to Also block previews from this website in the future and select an option from the drop-down menu.
  4. Click Remove and block to confirm.


Manage blocked previews

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
  2. Hover over Tools & settings, then select Workspace settings.
  3. Click the Attachments tab.
  4. Under Blocked previews, review the list of websites with previews turned off. Click the x icon to remove a website from the list and turn previews back on.

Note: On the Enterprise Grid subscription, link previews for websites are managed at the workspace level.


Manage third-party app link previews

Note: App link previews are coming soon. Owners and admins can adjust settings before this feature becomes available.

App link previews let members see key information from their connected apps, such as Jira, Google Drive and more. Owners and admins on paid subscriptions can choose how app link previews will appear for members.

Pro and Business+ subscriptions

Enterprise Grid subscription

Workspace owners and admins can manage app link previews.

  1. From the   Home tab, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
  2. Hover over Tools & settings, then click Workspace settings.
  3. Click Expand next to App link previews.
  4. Select a preview setting, then click Save.

Org owners and org admins can manage app link previews.

  1. From the   Home tab, click your organisation name in the sidebar.
  2. Hover over Tools & settings, then click Organisation settings.
  3. From the left sidebar, click   Settings then select Organisation settings.
  4. Click Edit next to App link previews.
  5. Select a preview setting, then click Save.


Manage app link previews for Slack Connect

Owners and admins can choose how app link previews will appear when shared with external people in Slack Connect conversations.

Pro and Business+ subscriptions

Enterprise Grid subscription

Workspace owners and admins can manage app link previews for Slack Connect conversations.

  1. From the   Home tab, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
  2. Hover over Tools & settings, then click Workspace settings.
  3. Click Expand next to App link previews for Slack Connect.
  4. Select a preview setting, then click Save.

Org owners and org admins can manage app link previews for Slack Connect conversations.

  1. From the   Home tab, click your organisation name in the sidebar.
  2. Hover over Tools & settings, then click Organisation settings.
  3. From the left sidebar, click   Slack Connect, then select Settings.
  4. Click Edit next to App link previews.
  5. Select a preview setting, then click Save.


Restrict thumbnail previews for third-party files

For Google Drive and OneDrive files, owners and admins can choose whether members can view thumbnail previews.

Free, Pro and Business+ subscriptions

Enterprise Grid subscription

Workspace owners and admins can manage thumbnail previews for third-party files.

  1. From the   Home tab, click your workspace name in the sidebar.
  2. Hover over Tools & settings, then click Workspace settings.
  3. Click Expand next to External file thumbnail previews.
  4. Select the file-sharing apps that you’d like to restrict link previews for, then click Save.

Org owners and org admins can manage thumbnail previews for third-party files.

  1. From the   Home tab, click your organisation name in the sidebar.
  2. Hover over Tools & settings, then click Organisation settings.
  3. From the left sidebar, click   Settings, then select Organisation settings.
  4. Click Edit next to External file thumbnail previews.
  5. Select the file-sharing apps that you’d like to restrict link previews for, then click Save.
