Create channel prefixes for your workspace

Help promote organisation and consistency in Slack by creating a set of standard channel prefixes. Adding prefixes to channel names can help members determine where relevant work is happening and find answers to questions more quickly.

Channel prefix basics

Default prefixes

Slack offers three default channel prefixes — #help#proj and #team  to help you get started. Workspace Owners and Admins have three options when managing prefixes:

  • Use Slack's default prefixes
  • Add your own custom prefixes in addition to, or instead of, the defaults
  • Remove the default prefixes entirely and don't add custom ones

Prefix limits

Workspaces on the free plan can have up to six prefixes, while Standard and Plus workspaces can have up to 99. Each workspace in an Enterprise Grid org can have up to 99 prefixes.

Member experience

When creating channels, members will be able to choose from their workspace's customised list of channel prefixes or create their own unique channel names.

Create channel prefixes

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Customise Slack, then click Channel Prefixes at the top of the page.
  3. Click Add Prefix
  4. Enter a prefix and a description telling members how it can be used.
  5. Click Save

Note: it's not currently possible to edit channel prefixes.

Delete channel prefixes

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Customise Slack, then click Channel Prefixes at the top of the page.
  3. Click the  icon next to the prefix you want to remove.

Tip: if you delete a prefix and replace it with another, ask members to rename any channels created using the old prefix, as they won't update automatically.
