Add an app to your workspace

Who can use this feature?
  • All members (by default)
  • FreeStandardPlus and Enterprise Grid subscriptions

When all of your teammates, tools and work are in one place, Slack can be even more useful. Add apps to your workspace to connect the tools and services that you use every day and get more work done without leaving Slack.

Find apps

There are two ways to browse for apps: directly in Slack or in the Slack App Directory

Discover apps in Slack

You can see apps that other members of your workspace are already using and search for new ones directly from Slack. From your desktop, click on  Apps at the top of the left sidebar. If you don't see this option, click  More to find it.

How apps are sorted in your workspace

  • Your top apps
    Your frequently used apps.
  • Apps in [workspace name]
    Apps installed to your workspace.
  • Recommended apps
Popular apps that you can instal to use in Slack. You won't see this section if more than 10 apps have already been added to your workspace.
  • Pre-approved apps for [workspace name]
Apps that a workspace owner has pre-approved for any member to use. You won't see this section if app installation hasn't been restricted for your workspace.

Tip: Click  Filter in the top right corner of the Apps page to view apps in your workspace by type or category.

Explore the Slack App Directory

The Slack App Directory lists every app that can be integrated with Slack. No matter what your role or industry, there’s an app that can help make your work simpler, more pleasant and more productive.

From the App Directory, you can search for specific apps, or browse apps sorted by category.

Instal apps to your workspace

By default, any member of a Slack workspace can instal an app. However, workspace owners can enable app approval to approve or restrict certain apps for their workspace and require members to send requests for any apps that they haven't approved.

Add an app

If app approval isn't required for your workspace, follow the steps below to instal an app:

  1. From your desktop, click  Apps at the top of the left sidebar. If you don't see this option, click  More to find it.
  2. Search for the app, then click on Add. You'll be taken to the App Directory.
  3. Click on Add to Slack
  4. Follow the prompts to instal the app. If the app is already installed, you'll be prompted to connect your account instead.

Note: All members of your workspace will be able to connect their accounts and use an app once it's installed.

Send an app request

If app approval is required for your workspace, follow the steps below to send a request to instal an app to your workspace owners and app managers:

  1. From your desktop, click  Apps at the top of the left sidebar. If you don't see this option, click  More to find it.
  2. Search for the app that you'd like to request, then click on Add. You'll be taken to the App Directory.
  3. Click on Add to Slack
  4. Add a custom message with more context about your request. This step may be optional, or required by your workspace owners.
  5. Click on Submit to send your request. Once it's been reviewed, you'll get a direct message from Slackbot.

Update a Slack app

Slack apps rely on sets of permission scopes that determine what information apps can access in Slack and how they can use that information. When a developer updates an app with new functionality or changes how certain aspects of the app work, they often add or remove scopes.

If app approval isn’t required for your workspace, any member can review and accept an app’s new scopes using an installation link provided by the app developer.

If your workspace requires app approval, any member can submit an app request for an app’s new scopes using an installation link provided by the app developer. Once a workspace owner or app manager has reviewed and approved the new scopes, any workspace member can complete the app update using the same link provided by the developer.

Tips for using apps

Apps can be built to do just about anything, so no two apps work in exactly the same way. These tips can help you make the most out of apps in your workspace:

  • Keep things focused. If an app posts a high volume of updates, consider creating a dedicated channel for the app. Anyone who wants to follow along can join that channel.
  • Get familiar with app shortcuts and commands. Many apps include shortcuts that you can use to take actions quickly from the shortcuts menu or individual messages in Slack. Others rely on slash commands to perform certain tasks right from Slack.
