Format your messages

Message formatting helps to add detail and clarity to communication in Slack. There are two options to format your messages:

  • Slack’s built-in formatting
You’ll see exactly what your messages look like before you send them, and you can add multiple formatting options to the same text.
  • Markup
From your desktop, you'll see formatting applied to your messages after you send them, and the formatting toolbar won't display in the message field.

Tip: Slack's built-in formatting will be enabled by default, but you can adjust your preference to use markup.

Use Slack’s built-in formatting for your messages

You can format your messages using the formatting toolbar in the message field, or by surrounding your text with the symbols associated with each format.

Note: If you're using Slack on your desktop, you also have the option of using keyboard shortcuts to format your messages.

Use markup to format your messages

If you've set your formatting preference to markup when using Slack on your desktop, learn about the formatting options below. Bear in mind that there are some limitations when markup is selected:

  • When you copy and paste formatted messages, they’ll appear in plain text.
  • Formatting bulleted lists with asterisks isn't supported. If you're using Slack for Mac, you can format bullet-point lists by pressing Option8 for each bullet point.
  • It’s not possible to automatically format numbered lists. To format numbered lists, type each number that you’d like to add, followed by a full stop.
  • You won’t see the option to indent lists in your messages.
  • You won't see the option to create hyperlinks in your messages.
