Guide to mobile notifications

On the move or away from your desk? Slack mobile notifications help keep you informed of what’s happening while out and about. Learn how to customise them to suit your needs.

Slack won’t send notifications to your mobile device until you’re considered inactive on your desktop. Keep reading to learn more about how this notification timing works.


How notifications work

When you first join a workspace, Slack will only notify you of messages directed at you. Here’s when you’ll receive notifications by default:

These settings also apply to your desktop notifications until you make changes. If you’re having issues, jump ahead to Troubleshooting notifications.


Configure your notifications

To receive mobile notifications, download the Slack app for your smartphone or tablet and sign in to your workspace. You'll begin receiving mobile notifications as soon as the Slack desktop app is closed.

  1. Swipe left to open the right sidebar.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Choose your preference.

Tip: Message previews will be displayed for each notification by default, but you can toggle Show previews off if you like.

  1. Tap the  three dots icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Under Notifications, tap Settings.
  4. Tap On mobile, notify me about... to change which messages send notifications.


Notification sound and appearance

  1. Swipe left to open the right sidebar.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Tap Sound and make a selection.
  1. Tap the  three dots icon.
  2. Under Notifications, tap Settings.
  3. Tap Settings, then System Options. 
  4. Tap Sound and make a selection. (For Android 9 users, tap Advanced, then select Sound).

Bear in mind: This option is not available on Huawei devices.


From desktop to mobile: notification timing

On desktop, you’re considered inactive after one minute of locking your computer screen or 10 minutes after Slack stops detecting cursor activity. You can choose if you want mobile notifications to start as soon as this time is up or after an additional delay. Here’s how:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu, then click Notifications.
  3. Select your timing under When I’m not active on desktop…

  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Notifications.
  4. Tap Notify Me on Mobile.
  5. Select your mobile notification timing. 
  1. Tap the  three dots icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Under Notifications, tap Settings.
  4. Tap Notify me on mobile.
  5. Choose your mobile notification timing.

Note: Mobile notifications clear individually after you’ve read the associated messages on desktop. On Slack for iOS, enable Background App Refresh in your iOS Settings with Slack running in the background.


Channel-specific & group DM notifications

You can set specific notification preferences for any channel or group direct message (DM). Choose when to get notifications or to mute activity altogether.

  1. Tap the channel name in the header to view the menu.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Choose your preference for the channel.

Note: to review all channel-specific settings, go to Settings. Tap Notifications, then Channel-specific notifications.

Channel-specific and group DM notifications

Note: If you have timing preferences set for mobile notifications, channel-specific notifications will be delivered once you've been inactive for the time that you specified.
