Set your Slack status and availability

When work gets busy, it's helpful to let your team know what you're up to and how quickly you can respond to messages. Slack has a couple of ways to share your whereabouts and indicate your availability to other members.

Update your status

To set a status, you can choose from five suggested options or enter a custom one. Your status emoji will show next to your display name, and your full status will appear in your profile. If you don’t select an emoji, a 💬speech balloon will display.

Set your status

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Click Set a status.
  3. Click the  smiley face icon to select an emoji, or choose from one of the suggested statuses.
  4. Type your custom status, then click Clear after to choose a time frame.
  5. Tap Save when you're finished.

When you hover on your status emoji, your full status will display above it.


Edit or clear your status

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Click Clear status to erase your current status, or click Edit status to set a new one.
  3. Enter a new status and select a duration. 

To set a new status or edit your existing one, use the keyboard shortcut ShiftY on Mac and CtrlShiftY on Windows and Linux.

Tip: On desktop, when you set your status to the default Vacationing suggestion, Do Not Disturb will turn on. Notifications will resume automatically when you clear your status, or after six weeks.

Note: To prevent revealing any sensitive information about your organization, members' custom statuses are not displayed within shared channels.


Availability in Slack

From the dot next to your name, your teammates will know your availability in Slack. Note that guests' activity indicators are shaped differently.

What availability looks like

Your teammates will see whether you're active, away, or in Do Not Disturb (DND) mode. When you launch Slack, you'll also see when you're connecting.

How Slack determines your availability

Slack automatically determines your availability based on how consistently you're interacting with the app on your device.

  You're active when... You're away after...
Desktop Slack is open and you're interacting with your computer 

30 minutes of system inactivity

Web browser You're interacting with Slack in your web browser 30 minutes of browser inactivity
Mobile Slack is open  You switch apps, close Slack, or lock your screen 

Note: There is no way to set yourself as permanently active.

Manually set your availability

Perhaps you'd like to appear as away, but still keep the Slack app open while you work. Here's how to manually set yourself to away:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. From the menu, select Set yourself to away.

When you manually set yourself to away, you'll start receiving mobile notifications. You'll appear as away until you open the menu again and select [Away] Set yourself to active.

  3. Next to Your Availability, tap the toggle to set yourself active or away.
  4. Tap the   close icon in the top left corner to finish.

  4. Tap the   back arrow in the top left to finish.

Tip: Type /away and /active in the message field on mobile or desktop to quickly update your availability.

View members' availability

You can find out whether your teammates are available or have a status set by looking them up in your workspace Directory.

  1. Click the  More Items menu at top right.
  2. Select Directory.

A solid dot shows the member is active; an empty dot indicates they're away. If they have a status set, you'll see it here.

View members' availability

You can view whether your teammates in Slack are available or have a status set by checking their profiles. You can also see the availability and statuses for any members listed in the Direct messages section of your left sidebar.
