Customize status suggestions for your workspace

Whether in a meeting, working from home, or on vacation in Fiji, members can set a status in Slack to let their team know what they're up to. Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can set default suggestions for members, making it easier to quickly choose a status.

Set default status suggestions

All members have five default options to choose from when setting their status in Slack. Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can customize suggestions with time frames using the steps below:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Click Settings & administration, then Customize [workspace name] from the menu.
  3. Click the Statuses tab.
  4. Select the default status suggestions.
  5. Click Save.

Tips for creating status suggestions

  • Select an emoji that illustrates each status clearly.
  • Keep statuses short so members can add to them if needed.
  • Avoid acronyms, terms, and phrases that aren't familiar to everyone.
  • Choose reasonable time frames so statuses don't clear too soon.

Tip: You can use custom emoji for default status suggestions. Learn how to create and add custom emoji to Slack.
