Manage your sidebar preferences

As you become a part of more channels and direct messages (DMs), the list of conversations in your sidebar will grow. There are a few preferences that you can manage to tailor your sidebar to the way that you work.

Tip: if your workspace is on the Standard, Plus or Enterprise Grid subscription, learn how to organise conversations with customised sections in your sidebar.

Manage your sidebar items

At the top of your sidebar, you’ll see a list of items that you can use to navigate Slack, such as Threads, Mentions & reactions and Saved items. These items are revealed as soon as you interact with the features in Slack. For example, your Saved items page will appear the first time you save a message or file. Click on  More to browse channels, people, files or apps.

Adjust sidebar items

You can adjust which items you see listed in your sidebar from your Preferences:

  1. From your desktop, click on your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click on Sidebar in the left-hand column.
  4. Under Show these items in the sidebar, tick or untick the boxes next to the sidebar items that you want to show or hide.

Tip: if you choose to hide any items from your sidebar, you can find them by clicking on  More.

Star channels and direct messages

You can star important conversations so that they’re easier to come back to. Starred conversations will be listed in the Starred section of your sidebar. This section will appear in your sidebar after you star a channel or DM for the first time.

Manage the conversations that you see

By default, Slack will display all the channels that you’ve joined and the DMs that you use most frequently in your sidebar. On the free version of Slack, you can choose to either show all your conversations or unread conversations only in your sidebar.

Note: on the Standard, Plus and Enterprise Grid subscriptions, you can manage this preference for each section in your sidebar. Visit Organise your sidebar with customised sections to learn more.

  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click on Sidebar in the left-hand column.
  4. Under Show, choose either All your conversations or Unread conversations only.

Tip: If you like, you can list your private channels separately from public channels in your sidebar. Tick the box next to List private channels separately in your sidebar preferences.

  • Recent activity conversations with recent activity will be listed at the top of the customised section.
