Guide to mobile notifications

Slack mobile notifications help to keep you informed about what’s happening in your workspace while you’re away from your desk. Read on to learn how to customise mobile notifications to suit your needs.


How notifications work

When you first join a workspace, Slack will only notify you of messages that are directed at you. By default, here’s when you’ll receive notifications:

These settings also apply to your desktop notifications until you make changes. If you’re having issues, skip ahead to Troubleshooting notifications.

Note: If your workspace has 50 members or less, you'll receive notifications for every new message by default.


Configure your notifications

To receive mobile notifications, download the Slack app for your smartphone or tablet and sign in to your workspace. Depending on your preferences, you'll either begin receiving mobile notifications after you become inactive or right away. Read more about this below.

  1. Tap the  You tab at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Select your notification preference below On mobile, notify me about...

Tip: Message previews will display for each notification by default, but you can toggle Show previews off if you like.

Notification sound and appearance

  1. Tap the  You tab at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Tap Notifications
  3. Tap Sound
  4. Select your preference.

  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap System options. 
  4. Tap Sound. (For Android 9 users, tap Advanced, then select Sound.)
  5. Select an option, then tap Save.

Note: Selecting notification sound and appearance preferences is not available on Huawei devices.


From desktop to mobile: notification timing

On desktop, you’re considered inactive one minute after locking your computer screen or ten minutes after Slack stops detecting cursor activity. You can choose, if you like, to receive mobile notifications as soon as they’re sent, as soon as you’re inactive or after an additional delay. Here’s how:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu. 
  3. Click Notifications in the left sidebar.
  4. Scroll down to When I'm not active on desktop... and choose your timing.

Tip: if you want to receive notifications on your desktop and mobile devices at the same time, select the preference immediately, even if I'm active

  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap Notify me on mobile.
  4. Choose your mobile notification timing.

  5. Tap Save.


Channel-specific and group DM notifications

You can set specific notification preferences for any channel or group DM. Choose when to get notifications or to mute certain notifications altogether:

  3. Choose your preference for the channel.

Note: If you have timing preferences set for mobile notifications, channel-specific notifications will be delivered once you've been inactive for the time that you specified.
