Change your Slack theme

To change the colour of your workspace, choose a new theme or create your own custom theme.

Tip: if you’d like a darker look for Slack, learn how to turn on dark mode from your preferences.

Choose a new theme

If you use multiple workspaces, try selecting a different theme for each one to help you tell them apart quickly. Your new theme will appear wherever you open that workspace, including on the desktop app, browser and mobile app.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. From the left-hand menu, choose Themes and scroll down to Sidebar theme
  4. Select a theme option. Or to select custom colours, click Customise your theme and share it with others.

Note: when you have dark mode turned on, the existing options for sidebar themes will look different (and darker) than they do in light mode. Custom themes will look the same in light and dark mode.

Tip: in your sidebar preferences, you'll find accessible themes that some people with colour-blindness have found helpful.

Select custom colours

To select custom colours for your Slack theme, you can type in any 6-digit HTML colour value or click a colour swatch to choose from the colour picker.

Share a custom Slack theme

Here’s how to share your custom Slack theme:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Preferences.
  3. From the left-hand menu, choose Themes and scroll down to Sidebar theme.
  4. Under Custom theme, select the list of hex values found at the bottom of the page and copy them to your clipboard.
  5. Paste your theme into any Slack channel or DM.

From their desktop, team members can just click the Switch button to start using your theme.

Tip: When you paste any 6-digit colour value into Slack, we’ll display a small swatch for each colour. 🎨✨
