Manage workspace invitation permissions and requests

By default, all members (but not guests) can invite people to join a Slack workspace. Workspace Owners and Admins can choose to remove members' permission to send invitations. If members are not able to send invitations, they can request invitations for Owners and Admins to review.

What to expect

  • Approving a request
When you approve a request, Slack will notify the requester and automatically send an invitation.
  • Denying a request
When you deny a request, Slack will let the requester know their invitation request was denied.

Note: If members have permission to send invitations, they can invite other members or request invitations for guests. Only Workspace Owners and Admins can invite guests.

Decide who can send invitations

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Settings & administration from the menu, then click Workspace settings.
  3. Click the Permissions tab.
  4. Next to Invitations, click Expand.
  5. Check or uncheck the box next to Require admin approval.
  6. Click Save.

Manage invitation requests

If members can request invites, their requests will be sent to all admins via direct messages from Slackbot. You can also choose to route requests to to a specific channel for admins to review.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Settings & administration from the menu, then click Workspace settings.
  3. Click the Permissions tab.
  4. Below Invitations, make sure the box next to Require admin approval is checked. If it's not, follow the steps above to require members to request invitations.
  5. Choose whether requests will be sent to all Workspace Admins via Slackbot or routed to a channel.
  6. Click Save.

Use APIs to manage invitation requests

Org Owners and Org Admins in an Enterprise Grid organization can build a custom app for Slack using a set of APIs to manage invitation requests for all workspaces in their org. Apps built with these APIs can be connected to third-party services, like an identity provider (IDP) or IT ticketing software, to ensure new members are properly provisioned.

Note: When a custom invitation request management app is installed to an org, invitation requests will be sent to Org Owners and Admins. Workspace Owners and Admins will no longer receive notifications from Slackbot or in channels.
