Set app management policies

Org Owners can set app management policies for all workspaces, depending on the needs of their Enterprise Grid org.

  • App management
Members can only install apps that have been pre-approved and must request approval to install any others. Each workspace's admins and App Managers will review and approve requests.
  • App Directory installations
Only allow members to install apps from the Slack App Directory.
  • Sign in with Slack
Allow members to sign in to third-party apps using their Slack account. Setting this policy requires granting third parties permission to view basic profile and workspace information.
  • Guest app use
Allow Multi-Channel Guests to use slash commands and Actions in channels they belong to.

Set an app management policy for all workspaces

By default, members of a workspace can install any app. Org Owners can change this permission and limit installations to only apps that have been pre-approved and require members to request other apps to install.

When this setting is turned on, Workspace Owners can decide how they want to manage app approvals for their workspace(s).

To enable admin app approval for all workspaces in an org, follow the steps below:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Administration from the menu, then Organization Settings
  3. From the left sidebar, click Settings, then select Organization Policies
  4. Click the Apps tab at the top of the page.
  5. Next to App Management, click Add Policy
  6. Check the box next to Require app approval and click Save Policy. Then, click Create Policy.

Note: If you don't enable admin app approval for all workspaces in an org, Workspace Owners can still turn this setting on for workspaces they manage.

Set other app management policies

To set a policy for App Directory installations, signing in with Slack, or guest app use, follow these steps:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Administration from the menu, then Organization Settings
  3. From the left sidebar, click Settings, then select Organization Policies
  4. Click the Apps tab at the top of the page.
  5. Next to the policy you want to set, click Add Policy
  6. Check the box next to the policy description and click Save Policy. Then, click Create Policy

Centralize app management

Org Owners can use the App Management API to centrally manage app approval requests for all workspaces in an org.

For more details and documentation, visit Slack API

Note: Using the App Management API to manage requests will disable the app management policy section of the Admin Dashboard and remove Workspace Owners' ability to manage admin app approval settings for their workspaces.
