Manage app installation settings for your workspace

Who can use this feature?
  • Workspace owners
  • FreeStandardPlus, and Enterprise Grid plans

By default, any member can install apps to a workspace without approval from a Workspace Owner. Workspace Owners can enable app approval to pre-approve apps for members to use, restrict certain apps, and manage members’ ability to request apps that are not pre-approved.

Manage app approval

In order to pre-approve apps for members to use in your workspace, a Workspace Owner needs to enable app approval. Follow the steps below to manage this setting:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Administration from the menu, then choose Manage apps to open the Slack App Directory.
  3. From the App Directory, click Manage in the top right corner of the page.
  4. Click App Management Settings in the left column.
  5. Toggle the Approve apps setting on or off.

Members may continue using any apps installed to your workspace before this setting was enabled. If you'd like, you can remove apps to prevent members from accessing them.

Note: If an Org Owner has set an app management policy, app approval will be turned on for all workspaces in the org. Workspace Owners will not be able to turn this setting off, but can still choose whether members can request apps and manage where requests will be sent.

Pre-approve apps

Pre-approve apps so members of your workspace can install and use them without requesting approval.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Administration from the menu, then choose Manage apps to open the Slack App Directory.
  3. From the App Directory, click Browse in the top right.
  4. Search for an app and select it from the list of search results.
  5. From the app page, click Approve

Once you pre-approve apps, members can find and add them to Slack from the Pre-Approved category in the App Directory.

Restrict apps

Restrict apps to prevent members of your workspace from installing them.

  1. From the App Directory, click Browse in the top right.
  2. Search for an app and select it from the list of search results.
  3. From the app page, click Restrict

If an app you restrict is already installed to your workspace, members will be able to keep using it unless you remove the app.

Manage members' ability to request apps

When app approval is enabled, members can request approval for apps that aren't pre-approved or restricted. Workspace Owners can manage this setting, and choose whether app requests will be delivered via direct messages (DMs) from Slackbot or routed to a channel.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Administration from the menu, then choose Manage apps to open the Slack App Directory.
  3. From the App Directory, click Manage in the top right corner of the page.
  4. Click App Management Settings in the left column.
  5. Check or uncheck the box next to Allow members to request approval for apps. If members can request apps, choose whether requests will be sent via DMs from Slackbot or routed to a channel.
  6. To require comments along with app requests, check the box next to Require members to provide a comment when requesting approval of an app

Note: Members can also request custom integrations, like slash commands. If a custom integration is approved, only the requester can install it.

Choose members to help manage app requests
