Use emoji and emoticons

Emoji are a spin on common emoticons. In Slack, emoji are both fun and practical: use them to enhance your message formatting, add reactions, or copy messages from one channel to another.

Tip: Learn how to create and add custom emoji to Slack.

Add emoji to your messages

Type the emoji code

Type a standard emoji code in the message field, using a : colon followed by the first few letters of the code or emoji alias. You can scroll emoji to select the one you're looking for.

Change your emoji display

There are a few preferences for managing how emoji display in Slack. Keep in mind that Slack displays emoji in Apple's style on iOS and Mac devices, and Google's style on Windows, Linux, and Android devices.

Switch between Unicode and plain text

By default, Slack will display Unicode emoji, but you can choose to display emoji as plain text instead if you’d like.

Choose your jumbomoji preference

When you add emoji to a message, the size of the emoji will adjust to match the text. If your message doesn't have any text and only contains emoji, the emoji will appear larger (we call them jumbomoji).
