Use emoji and emoticons

Emoji are a spin on common emoticons that you can use to add some pizzazz to your Slack messages. 😎

Tip: Want even more emoji? Respond to messages with emoji reactions or create your own custom emoji.

Add emoji to Slack messages

Type the emoji code

Type a standard emoji code in the message field, using a : colon followed by the first few letters of the code or emoji alias. You can scroll emoji to select the exact one you're looking for.

Change your emoji display

The emoji you see in Slack will reflect the device you're using. Slack displays emoji in Apple's style on iOS and Mac devices, while Windows, Linux, and Android users will see them in Google's style.

Switch between unicode and plain text

By default, emoji in Slack display as unicode, but you can display them as plain text instead if you'd like.

Manage your jumbomoji preference

When you add emoji to a message, the size of the emoji will adjust to match the text. If your message doesn't have any text and only contains emoji, the emoji will appear larger (we call them jumbomoji).
