View message activity

With message activity, owners, admins, and members with permission can see how many people have interacted with a given message in Slack. You can use message data to measure the impact of announcements and internal communications campaigns.

What to expect

  • Owners and admins can view message activity for their workspace or Enterprise Grid org. They can also give certain members permission to view message activity.
  • Message activity is available for messages posted by anyone in public channels with at least 50 members. You can only view message activity for messages sent in the last 90 days.
  • Owners and admins can disable message activity for their organization.

 

View message activity

You can view message data from the channel where the message was posted. Follow the steps below to view message activity, then read on to learn more about the available information.

  1. Hover over a message and click the  three dots icon.
  2. Select View message activity.
  3. If you'd like, click the date ranges under Activity over time to adjust the graph.


What you'll see

What the data means

Message data Description
Activity stats The number of members who have viewed, reacted to, or clicked a message, and the number of times a message was shared.
Graph A visual representation of message views over time. You can select preset time frames to adjust the graph.
Device summary A percentage breakdown of where members first viewed the message: in a browser, in the Slack desktop app, or in the Slack mobile apps.
Top replies A preview of the message’s threaded replies with the most reactions. This will only be visible when the message has at least one reply.
Views by department* The number of viewers per department that viewed the message.

*This section will display only if your workspace or Enterprise Grid org syncs department profile fields to your identity provider or internal directories with SCIM provisioning.


Manage permissions for message activity

Enterprise Grid

Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can manage who can view message activity in their workspace.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Click Settings & administration, then select Workspace settings.
  3. Click the Permissions tab.
  4. Next to Message Activity, click Expand.
  5. Select who can view message activity.
  6. Click Save.

Org Owners and Org Admins can manage who can view message activity in their Enterprise Grid org.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Settings & administration, then click Organization settings from the menu.
  3. Click Settings in the left sidebar, then select Organization settings.
  4. Click Edit next to Message activity.
  5. Select who can view message activity.
  6. Click Save.

Message activity is enabled for your workspace by default. Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can disable message activity for their workspace and enable it again at any time.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Click Settings & administration, then select Workspace settings.
  3. Click the Permissions tab.
  4. Next to Message Activity, click Expand.
  5. Check or uncheck the box next to Enable message activity.
  6. Click Save.

Message activity is enabled for your Enterprise Grid org by default. Org Owners and Org Admins can disable message activity for all the workspaces in their org and enable it again at any time.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Settings & administration, then click Organization settings from the menu.
  3. Click Settings in the left sidebar, then select Organization settings.
  4. Click Disable or Enable next to Message Activity, then confirm your selection.
