Join a channel

In a Slack workspace, work comes together in dedicated spaces called channels. Use channels to organise conversations about specific projects, subjects or purposes. You can browse and join existing channels in your workspace. If you don't see the channel that you're looking for, you can create a channel and add your teammates.

Tip: If you've received an invitation to share a channel with an external organisation, learn how to accept the invitation.

What to expect

  • You can't browse for private channels in Slack. To join, you'll need to be added by one of the private channel's members.
  • When you join a channel, you'll be added to the member list.
  • The notifications that you receive in a channel will depend on your preferences. If you like, you can adjust your channel-specific notifications at any time.
  • You can leave a public or private channel at any time and rejoin public channels if you need to. If you leave a private channel, you'll need to be added back by a current member.
