Adjust your huddles and calls preferences

If you use Slack huddles or calls in your workspace, there are a few preferences you can manage to tailor your audio and video in Slack.

Heads up! Slack calls will not be available after March 29, 2023. To have live audio or video conversations with your coworkers, try huddles instead.


Select your default camera

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Audio & video in the left-side column.
  4. Under Camera, open the drop-down menu to select an option.


Set your microphone preferences

You have a few options for microphone preferences:

  • Select a default microphone
  • Enable automatic gain control to ensure your voice stays at a constant level for others you're talking with
  • Enable noise suppression to remove background sound


Manage your microphone preferences

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Audio & video in the left-side column.
  4. Under Microphone, open the drop-down menu to select an option.
  5. If you’d like, check or uncheck the box to manage automatic gain control.

To test your microphone, say a few words and check that the input level moves up and down while you're speaking.


Select your default speaker

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Audio & video in the left-side column.
  4. Under Speaker, open the menu to select an option.


Set your huddles or calls preferences

Calls

You can set the following preferences for huddles:

  • Set your status to  In a huddle when you’re in a huddle
  • Always join huddles with your audio muted
  • Automatically turn on captions when you're in a huddle
  • Show a warning if you’ll be starting a huddle in a channel with more than 150 members
  • Automatically leave huddles when your computer locks


Manage your huddles preferences

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Audio & video in the left-side column.
  4. Below When joining a huddle, check or uncheck the boxes to set your preferences.

You can set the following preferences for Slack calls:

  • Set your status to  On a call when you’re on a call
  • Always join Slack calls with your audio muted
  • Automatically leave calls when your computer locks

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Audio & video in the left-side column.
  4. Below When joining a Slack call, check or uncheck the boxes to set your preferences.
