Remove someone from a channel

The ability to remove people from channels depends on the channel management permissions set by a Workspace Owner or Org owner. See the available and default settings below:

Public channels

  • Everyone, except guests
  • Workspace Admins and Owners
    (default setting)
  • Workspace Owners only

Private channels

  • Everyone, except guests
    (default setting) 
  • Workspace Admins and Owners 
  • Workspace Owners only

Note: If you're a member and don't have the option to remove someone from a channel, reach out to a Workspace Owner or Admin for help.

Understand channel access

Can be removed from a public channel  ✓
Need an invite to re-join a public channel   ✓ 
Can be removed from a private channel  ✓
Need an invite to re-join a private channel  ✓
Can access messages and files in any public channel
(without joining)

Note: It's not possible to remove people from the #general channel.

Manage channel members

To remove someone from a channel, use the steps below. Slackbot will notify the member they were removed.



Using a slash command

Quickly remove someone from a channel by using a slash command.

  1. Type /remove @member into the message input field of a channel.
  2. Press Enter or click Send.
  3. Click Yes, remove them.

From the member list

  1. Below the channel name, click the  View member list icon.
  2. From the members list in the right sidebar, find the person you want to remove and click on their name.
  3. Select Remove from #channel.
  4. Click Yes, remove them to confirm.
  1. Tap the channel you'd like to remove the member from.
  2. In the message field, type the /remove @member slash command.
  3. Tap the   paper plane icon.

Tip: Workspace Owners and Admins can manage join and leave messages for visibility of who's coming and going in channels.
