Move group DMs to a private channel

Group direct messages (DMs) are conversations between three or more people, and they're great for getting in touch quickly. When they turn into long-term discussions — or when you need to invite more than nine people to the conversation — you can convert your group DM to a private channel.

Note: When you convert a group DM to a private channel in an Enterprise Grid org, your conversation will become a multi-workspace channel

Convert a group DM to a private channel

  1. From your desktop, click the  gear icon in the top right.
  2. From the menu, select Convert to private channel.
  3. To confirm, click Yes, continue.
  4. Enter a name for the new channel.
  5. Click Convert to a private channel.

All members of the group DM will be notified with a Slackbot message. Here's an example: Screen_Shot_2017-11-28_at_2.23.36_PM.png

Note: Only members with permission to create private channels can move a group DM to a private channel.

Tip: When you invite a new member to a private channel, you'll have the option to retain message history. Choosing this option allows the new member to view your original group DMs.
