Use posts in Slack

Posts let you create, edit, and share fully-formatted documents directly in Slack. They’re a great way to share and collaborate on long-form content — like project plans or meeting notes.

Unlike sending a message in channel, a post offers additional formatting options and allows you to collaborate with other members.

Create a post

To create a new post, follow these steps:

  1. From your desktop, click the   paper clip icon next to the message field.
  2. Select Post from the menu.
  3. Enter a title and begin typing. Your work will be saved automatically.

You can see a list of posts you've created at any time. Here's how:

  1. Click the  More items icon in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Files.

Note: You can view posts on Slack’s mobile apps, but you’ll need to use Slack on desktop to create and edit them.

Edit a post

Before editing a post, you’ll have to first share it somewhere in Slack. This can be done in any channel or direct message (DM), including in a DM with yourself or Slackbot. Once shared, follow these steps:

  1. Open the post and click Edit.
  2. Make your changes.
  3. Once you’re finished, click Done Editing.

With shared editing turned on, you and other members can take turns editing a post. If someone is editing, you’ll see their profile photo on the post and the Edit button will be unavailable.

How shared editing works

When a post is shared in a channel, any member of that channel will be able to edit to it. A post shared in a private channel or direct message can only be edited by the members in those channels or messages.

Manage shared editing

  1. Open your post.
  2. In the top right, click the Share button.
  3. Check or uncheck the box next to Let others edit this post.
  4. Click Share to save.

Formatting options

In a post, a menu with formatting options will appear when you highlight a portion of text.

Add images to your post

It's not possible to attach or upload an image to a post, but there are two ways to include images:

  • Image from the web:
Simply paste the image URL in the post.
  • Images shared in your Slack workspace:
Paste the link to the image in Slack in the post.

Here's how to get a link:

  1. Hover over the image you'd like to use.
  2. Click the  More options icon and choose Copy link to file.
  3. Paste the link in the post. If the image is public and shared, it will automatically expand in your post.
