Gmail add-on for Slack
Send emails into Slack channels and direct messages (DMs) directly from your email inbox with the Gmail add-on for Slack.
You can install the add-on from these devices:
- Any computer
- iPhone
- Android phones and tablets
Step 1: Install the Slack add-on on Gmail
- Head to the Slack for Gmail page in the G Suite Marketplace.
- Click Install and follow the prompts.
- Click Done.
Tip: if you're unable to install the add-on, ask a G Suite administrator at your company to approve Slack for Gmail from the G Suite Admin Console.
Step 2: Connect Gmail to your Slack account
After you install the add-on, connect your Gmail account to a Slack workspace. If you're part of an Enterprise Grid org, you can connect any workspaces that you're a member of.
Note: once you connect Gmail to your Slack account from your computer, you'll see the add-on from your mobile device as well.
Connect Gmail to a workspace
- From your desktop, open Gmail.
- Click the Slack icon on the right-hand panel. If you don't see the icon, open the side panel by clicking the left arrow icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- When prompted, open an email.
- Click Connect to Slack.
- Click Allow to grant the add-on access to your Gmail account.
Connect another workspace
If you're a member of more than one Slack workspace or an Enterprise Grid org, you can easily connect additional workspaces.
- From your desktop, open Gmail. Then, open an email.
- Click the Slack icon on the right sidebar.
- Click Search channels and people.
- Click the arrow icon below Select a workspace.
- Select + Add workspace.
- Click Add workspace.
- Open the drop-down menu in the top right-hand corner and select a workspace.
- Click Allow.
Step 3: Send emails to Slack
Now that you’re connected, you’re ready to start sending emails to Slack.

- Open an email, then click the Slack icon in the right-hand sidebar.
- Click Search channels and people.
- Select a workspace from the drop-down menu.
- To send the email to a channel, type the channel name and press Enter.
- To send an email to a direct message, start typing the name of a person and select their name.
- If you like, add a message and any attachments that you want to include.
- Click Send to [name].
- Click View to see your email in Slack.
Note: the header and body of an email sent to Slack cannot exceed 1 MB, or 30 MB when combined with attachments. Emails can include up to 20 attachments.
- Open the Gmail app, then open an email.
- Scroll to the bottom of the email, then tap the Slack icon.
- Tap Search channels and people.
- You’ll see your workspace name below Select a workspace. To switch to another workspace, tap the workspace name and select the one that you want.
- Tap Search channels and people to search, or select a channel or person from the list.
- If you like, add a message and any attachments that you want to include.
- Tap Send to [name].
- Tap View to see your email in Slack.

- Tap Search channels and people.
- Select a workspace from the drop-down menu.
- Start typing the name of a channel or person, then select it from the drop-down menu.
- If you like, add a message and any attachments that you want to include.
- Tap Send.
- Tap View to see your email in Slack.

Tip: emails in Slack are treated as files and will count towards your workspace's file storage limit.
Disconnect Gmail and Slack
The steps to disconnect an add-on differ depending on whether you access Gmail through G Suite or not.
G Suite
Non-G Suite
- Go to the G Suite Marketplace.
- If prompted, sign in with your Google account.
- Click Manage apps.
- Find Slack, then select Manage.
- Click Remove.
- From your desktop, open Gmail.
- Click the gear icon to open Settings.
- Select Add-ons.
- Below Installed add-ons, select Manage.
- Next to Slack, open the options menu.
- Click on Remove.
Tip: G Suite administrators can remove the add-on for their entire domain from the Marketplace apps section of the Admin console.
