Google Drive for Slack

If you use Google Drive, you can use the app for Slack to access, share, create, and even comment on files — right from your workspace. Read on to learn how to set up the Google Drive app and start creating and sharing your files.

Note: All of your Google Drive files (even those created or shared in Slack) are stored in Google Drive. You can only search in Slack for the files that have been shared or created in your workspace.

Set up the Google Drive app

To use the Google Drive app, every workspace member must connect the app to Slack. There are three ways to do this:

Share a Google Drive link

  1. Paste a link to the file you’d like to share in the message field and press Enter to send.
  2. In a message only visible to you, Slackbot will ask your permission to read and import the file. (If you click Yes, you'll only have to do this once.)
  3. Once you grant permission to read the file, Slack will display a preview of it.

Install the app from the Slack App Directory

  1. Visit the Google Drive page in Slack's App Directory.
  2. Click Add to Slack.
  3. Click Add Google Drive app.
  4. Select Authorize.
  5. Click Authenticate your Google Drive account.
  6. Select the Google account you want to connect to Slack.
  7. Click Allow.

When you're ready to share a file, choose from one of these options:

  • Drag and drop it directly into Slack
  • Copy and paste the link into the message field
  • Upload the file by clicking the plus icon next to the message field

Add Slack to your Google account

From the G Suite Marketplace, you can add the Slack app to your Google account. This will automatically install the Google Drive app to your Slack workspace, or direct you to create a new one. Here's what to do:

  1. Visit the Slack app in the G Suite Marketplace.
  2. Click Install on the right-hand side, then click Continue.
  3. Choose the Google account you'd like Slack to access, then click Allow.

Voila! Slack is now connected to your Google account. You may need to complete additional setup to configure Google Drive for Slack.

Tip: You can mute Google Drive link previews in Slack: share a Google Drive link in a channel and choose to Never import those files. To unmute, visit the Muted Integrations page.

Create a Google Drive file in Slack

  1. Click the  paperclip icon to the left of the message field.
  2. Hover over  Create new and select a file type.
  3. Give the file a title.
  4. To share the file with a channel or person, click the checkbox next to Share in. If you're not ready to share just yet, uncheck the box.
  5. Click Create to launch the new file.

Share a Google Drive file in Slack

  1. Click the  paperclip icon to the left of the message field.
  2. Select   Google Drive.
  3. Choose which file(s) to import, then click Select to share.

If other members don't yet have access to the file — either to view, edit, or leave comments — Slackbot will ask if you want to change permissions.

Manage notifications

Instead of juggling multiple tools, you can set up Google Drive app notifications to get alerts in Slack when actions are taken on your files. You can also resolve actions, reply to comments, or open original files for review in Slack.

When you'll be notified in Slack:

  • Someone requests access to one of your Google Drive files
  • Google Drive files are shared with you
  • Someone comments on your file (including suggestions and assigned tasks)
  • Google Drive sends you a storage alert

If you're adding the Google Drive app to Slack for the first time, app notifications will automatically be enabled. However, if you added the app previously, you'll need to allow it to notify you. Here's how:

  1. Drag and drop a file into Slack or click the   paperclip icon to the left of the message field.
  2. Locate and choose your file, then click Select.
  3. The Google Drive app will ask if you’d like to get updates in Slack. Click Yes, allow to get set up.

Stop notifications for all files

  1. In Slack, begin a direct message with Google Drive.
  2. Type off in the message field and send. (To turn notifications back on at any time, type on in the message field and send.)

Stop notifications for a specific file

  1. Open the Google Doc.
  2. Select Comments in the top-right corner.
  3. Choose Notifications, then select which updates you’d like to receive.

Switch notifications between workspaces

If you have the same Google Drive account connected to more than one workspace, you’ll only receive notifications in the workspace you connected to Google Drive most recently. To switch your notifications to a different workspace, follow the steps below:

  1. From that workspace, click Google Drive in the left sidebar.
  2. Type on in the message field and send.

View and reply to comments

With Google Drive notifications set up, you'll be able to see new comments on your files and reply to them directly in Slack using threads. When you get a notification, click the  Start a thread icon and enter your reply.
