Manage notifications for specific channels and direct messages

Notifications in Slack are designed to keep you informed whether you're at your desk or on the go. To get notifications about the things you care about most, you can set notification preferences for specific channels and direct messages (DMs) with three or more people.

Tip: You can mute conversations to turn off notifications, allowing you to read new messages when you want.

Configure conversation-specific notifications

You can choose to be notified about every new message, just mentions, or nothing in channels and DMs with three or more people. Here’s how:

  1. Open a channel or group DM.
  2. Click the  details icon in the top right.
  3. Click  More, then select Change notifications.
  4. Choose your notification preference, and whether you'd like to use different settings for your mobile device.
  5. Click the  close icon in the top right when you're done.
  1. From a channel or group DM, tap the  details icon.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Choose your preference for the conversation.

Note: If you choose to be notified only about mentions, the box next to Also include @channel and @here will be checked by default. You can uncheck this box if channel posting permissions or messaging permissions have not been restricted for your workspace.

Review conversation-specific notifications

You can view a list of channels and group DMs with conversation-specific notification settings (including muted conversations) from your preferences.

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu to open your notification preferences.
  3. Scroll down to Channel-specific notifications.

Tip: You can click the  close icon next to any conversation to reset notifications back to their default setting.

  1. Tap the  You tab at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap Channel-Specific Notifications.
