Manage external people in your org

If your organization is working with external partners in Slack Connect, Org Owners and Org Admins with an assigned channel management permission can view and manage the channels that these external people can access.

View external people in your Slack Connect channels

Org Owners or Org Admins can use the steps below to view a list of all external people participating in channels hosted by your organization, including the organization they belong to, their display name and their email address:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Settings & administration from the menu, then click Organization Settings.
  3. Click People in the left sidebar, then click External People.
  4. Search for an individual by name or email address, or filter by organization name.
  5. To see a full list of the channels an individual is in, click their name to open the Details view, then click the Channels tab.

Note: If someone has permission only to post in a channel they belong to in your org, you’ll see the option to remove them from channels in the menu next to their name.

Remove external people from your Slack Connect channels

You can remove external people from channels that your organization owns where they have permission only to post. Removing them from these channels will not revoke their access to their direct messages or other channels they belong to that are connected to your org. If you’d like, you can also remove a member from multiple channels at once.

Note: Removing someone from these channels will not end all communication with their organization. To revoke all access entirely, be sure to disconnect from an organization.

Remove someone from a channel

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Settings & administration from the menu, then click Organization Settings.
  3. Click People in the left sidebar, then click External People.
  4. Search for an individual, then click their name to view their profile.
  5. Click the Channels tab.
  6. Click the  three dots icon next to the channel you’d like to remove the external person from. If you don’t see this option, you cannot remove this person from the channel.
  7. Select Remove from channel, then click Remove.

If there is no  three dots icon next to the channel name, this could mean that the external person has permission to post, invite, and more, or that they are the owner of that channel and cannot be removed.

Tip: You can filter the menu by channel owner to show which organizations own each of the connected channels in your Enterprise Grid org that the user belongs to.

Remove someone from multiple channels

If a member belongs to more than one channel where they have permission only to post, you can remove them from multiple channels at once by following these steps:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Settings & administration from the menu, then click Organization Settings.
  3. Click People in the left sidebar, then click External People.
  4. Search for an individual, then click their name to view their profile.
  5. Click Manage in the top right corner.
  6. Choose either All channels or Choose specific channels, then click Remove.

Tip: If you only have permission to manage public channels, private channels will not be listed. To remove someone from a private channel you don’t have access to, reach out to an Org Owner for additional help.
