Invite new members to your workspace

A Slack workspace is made up of channels where team members can communicate and work together. Whether your Slack workspace is brand new or it's been around for a while, read on to learn how to invite others to join.

If you need to add someone to a channel rather than a workspace, learn how in Add people to a channel.

Tip: If you're an Org Owner or Org Admin on the Enterprise Grid plan, visit Add members to workspaces on Enterprise Grid for more details.

Invitation permissions

Your ability to invite others to your workspace depends on your role in Slack and your workspace settings.

  • Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can invite members and guests. Guests can only be invited to workspaces on paid plans.
  • By default, members can invite other members. If an owner or admin has restricted members from sending invitations, they can request invitations for approval instead.
  • Guests cannot send or request invitations.

Request an invitation

On the Free, Standard, and Plus plans, Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can choose to restrict who can send invitations. If members are restricted from sending invitations, they can request invitations instead and will receive a message from Slackbot when an owner or admin has approved or denied their request.

Allow email signup

To allow people to join a workspace using an email address from an approved domain (ex. your company’s domain), Workspace Owners on all plans can enable email sign up. Slack will send a validation link to email addresses on the approved domain to verify their identity prior to adding people to that workspace.

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Settings & administration from the menu, then click Workspace settings.
  3. Next to Joining This Workspace, click Expand.
  4. Choose Allow invitations, and approve invitations for any email address from these domains.
  5. Enter your domain(s), then click Save.

Tip: If a member requests an invitation for someone with an email address from an approved domain, an invitation will be sent automatically.

Manage pending invitations

Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can view pending and accepted invitations and make the following changes:

  • Revoke Invitation
Revoke an invitation to prevent an invited member from using it, or disable email notifications they may receive from Slack before accepting
  • Resend Invitation
Send a new email invitation if the original invitation has expired or been lost
  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Invite people to [workspace name] from the menu.
  3. Click See past invites.
  4. Click the Pending tab at the top of the page.
  5. Next to the invitation you'd like to manage, click Resend Invitation or Revoke.

Note: If you revoke a pending invitation, the invited member's account will show up as deactivated. To invite this person again, you'll need to reactivate the account from the Manage members page, then select Resend invitation.

Invitation limits

In certain circumstances, Slack may limit your ability to send invitations. This typically happens if you’ve sent many invites, but few have been accepted.

If you hit an invite limit, all of your pending invitations will remain valid. Please note that revoking pending invites will not lift an invitation limit.

To avoid hitting an invite limit, create an invite link (or ask your Workspace Owner or Admin to do so) and share it with anyone you'd like to join your workspace.
