Edit tabs in a channel or DM

Every Slack channel and direct message (DM) has dedicated tabs for its messages, channel or DM canvas, files, workflows, pins, and bookmarks that you can edit in the following ways:

  • Choose how tabs are ordered and displayed in a conversation
  • Create new tabs for canvases and lists
  • Organize bookmarks into folders


Choose how tabs are displayed

Drag and drop tabs to arrange them, and follow the steps below to choose which tabs you’d like to display to all members of the conversation:

  1. From your desktop, open a channel or DM.
  2. Click the   plus button in the conversation header, then select Edit tabs.
  3. Click the   show/hide icon next to the tabs you’d like to display, or the   trash icon next to the tabs you’d like to delete, then click   close.


Manage folders for bookmarks

You can organize useful links that are relevant to a conversation into bookmark folders. Each folder will appear as a tab in the conversation header.


Create a folder

  1. From your desktop, open a channel or DM.
  2. Click the   plus button in the conversation header, then select   Bookmark Folder.
  3. Enter a name for your folder and click Add.
  4. Click the bookmark folder to open it, then click Add Bookmark to add links to the folder.


Edit or delete a folder

  1. From your desktop, open a channel or DM.
  2. Right-click the bookmark folder and select Rename tab or Remove tab.
  3. Make your changes and click Save or Delete.

Note: Once you create a folder for bookmarks, anyone in the conversation will be able to edit the bookmarks, even if editing tabs is restricted to Channel Managers.


Create new tabs for canvases and lists

To feature important canvases and lists prominently in a channel or DM, you can add them as tabs.

Add a canvas

Add a list

  1. From your desktop, open a channel or DM.
  2. Click the   plus button in the conversation header, then select
      Canvas.
  3. Search for and select a canvas, or click Create New Canvas.
  4. Click Insert.
  5. Review the sharing permissions, then click Share.

  3. Search for and select a list, or click Create New List.
  4. Click Insert.
  5. Review the sharing permissions, then click Share.


Manage who can edit tabs

Channel Managers can allow everyone to edit the tabs in a channel, or restrict editing to only Channel Managers.

  1. From your desktop, open a channel that you manage.
  2. Click the channel name in the conversation header, then click Tabs.

  3. Under Choose who can add, remove, and reorder tabs, select an option from the drop-down menu.
