Create shared channels

Shared channels let two separate organizations work together in a single channel, each from their own Slack workspace. There are three components to creating a shared channel:

  • An organization sends an invitation link to another organization.
  • The receiving organization chooses to accept or decline the invitation.
  • If accepted, both organizations must approve the request to share a channel.

Note: To share a channel, both workspaces must be on a paid plan. If you're using the free version of Slack, learn how to upgrade your workspace. Read more about managing shared channels on the Standard and Plus and Enterprise Grid plans.


Who can create shared channels?

Any member (but not guests) can send or accept an invitation to share a channel. Before a channel is shared, the request must be approved by both organizations:

  • On the Standard and Plus plans, by default, only Workspace Owners and Workspace Admins can approve requests to share a channel.
  • On the Enterprise Grid plan, by default, only Org Owners and Org Admins can approve requests to share a channel.
  • Org Owners/Admins on the Enterprise Grid plan and Workspace Owners/Admins on the Standard and Plus plans can give others permission to approve requests to share a channel.


Create a shared channel

You can create a brand new channel to share with another organization, or you can share an existing channel.

Things to keep in mind

  • Sharing a channel gives another organization access to only that channel and not everything in your workspace.
  • When you share an existing channel, the other organization can view the channel’s message history, members, and any bots.
  • Members of both organizations can direct message each other if they’re a part of the same shared channel.
  • You can share any channel with one other workspace or Enterprise Grid org, except for the #general channel.


Send a shared channel invitation

Before you get started, you’ll need the contact information of someone from the other organization, such as an email address, phone number, or any communication platform you prefer. You can then send a shared channel invitation link to another organization the way you’d share any link.

Create a new channel

Share an existing channel

  1. Click the  plus icon next to Channels in the left sidebar. For more details, see Create a channel.
  2. Next to the link, click Copy, then Done.
  3. Using the contact information you have, share the invitation link outside of Slack. You can share this with one or multiple members of another organization. 
  1. From your desktop, open the channel you'd like to share.
  2. Click the  gear icon to open the Channel Settings menu.
  3. Select Add people to channel.
  4. Click Share this channel.
  5. Next to the link, click Copy, then Done.
  6. Using the contact information you have, share the invitation link outside of Slack. You can share this with one or multiple members of another organization.

Note: Shared channel invitations expire after seven days. If an invitation link expires before it’s accepted or approved, you can copy a new invitation link to share.


Accept a shared channel invitation

When you receive a shared channel invitation link from a member of another organization, you or anyone else in your workspace who also received the invitation can accept it. To decline an invitation, you don’t have to take any action.

  1. Click the invitation link.
  2. Choose the workspace the shared channel will be a part of, or click Sign in to another workspace.
  3. Review and accept the details, then click Accept Invitation.
  4. Choose if you’d like to change the channel name, or make it a public or private channel. Note that these changes will only apply to your workspace and not to the external organization.
  5. Click Accept Invitation.

Tip: The same shared channel invitation link can be sent to multiple people. Only one member of your organization needs to accept the invitation link before it’s pending approval.


Approve or decline a request to share a channel

When someone in your organization accepts a shared channel invitation, a request will be sent to both organizations to review and approve. View Manage shared channels on the Standard and Plus plans or Manage shared channels on Enterprise Grid to learn how.


Stop sharing a channel

When a project ends, or a channel is simply no longer needed, you can stop sharing it. Visit Stop sharing channels with another organization to learn how.
