Getting started for guests

Slack is a channel-based messaging platform that helps companies work together more effectively. It’s common for companies to invite consultants, clients, interns or temporary employees to a limited set of channels in their workspace. If you've been invited to join a Slack workspace as a guest, keep reading to learn more about the guest role, how to use Slack and what to expect.


Guests in a Slack workspace

There are two types of guest roles available in Slack, each with their own set of permissions: Single-channel guests and multi-channel guests. 

  • Single-channel guests can join a workspace with an invitation and can access one specific channel.
  • Multi-channel guests can join a workspace with an invitation and can access one or more channels.

Guests have different permissions and access to owners, admins and members. When you’re ready, visit Roles and permissions in Slack for more.

Step 1: Join a workspace

To join a Slack workspace, accept the email invitation that you’ve been sent and create your guest account.

Are you expecting an email invitation, but it hasn’t arrived yet? Check your spam and junk folders, as well as any inbox filters. If you’re still having trouble, ask the sender to confirm that they’ve used the correct email address. You can always receive a new invitation if needed.

 

Step 2: Set up your profile

Complete your profile

It’s helpful to complete your profile so others can learn more about who you are. Knowing what you do, where you’re located and your time zone makes it easier to work together. Make sure that you add a profile photo while you’re at it!

Adjust your notifications and preferences

Step 3: Download Slack’s desktop and mobile apps

You can sign in and use Slack from a web browser on your desktop at any time (just go to slack.com/signin). But by downloading our desktop and mobile apps, you can stay signed in to multiple workspaces, have more control over notifications and stay in sync even when you’re on the move.

Synchronised apps: Whatever you do on one device is reflected everywhere – our Slack apps keep your place, letting you pick up wherever you left off. Very cool!
