Add people to a channel

In a Slack workspace, teamwork happens in channels. A channel is a single place to share messages, tools, and files. To collaborate and get work done with the right people, you can add full members, invited members, and guests to channels.

What to expect

  • When you add an invited member to a channel, they'll receive email notifications of @mentions and can continue conversations in Slack once they accept their invitation to join a workspace.
  • Guests will only have access to channels they're added to, not an entire workspace or Enterprise Grid org.
  • Org Owners and Admins and Workspace Owners and Admins can add members to public channels they're not a part of.

Add large groups of people to a channel

From your desktop, you can add up to 1,000 people to a channel at once. Before getting started, create a list of your teammates' names or email addresses. You can find this information in the directory.

Note: We’re in the process of gradually rolling out ways to add people to a channel in bulk on the mobile app. If you’re not seeing this new functionality yet on Slack for iOS or Android, please stay tuned.

Private channel history

When inviting people to a private channel, you have two options:

  • Add them to an existing private channel and give the newly-added members access to the channel's history.
  • Start a new private channel and the existing channel will be renamed and archived. The new channel will include all members of the archived channel and any new people you’ve invited. Everyone except the newly-added members will see a link to the original channel's archive.
Who can use this feature?
  • All members and Multi-Channel Guests
  • FreeStandardPlus, and Enterprise Grid plans
