Browse, share, and download files in Slack

You can browse files added to your Slack workspace on your desktop and mobile devices, then share them to channels or direct messages (DMs) in Slack. To view the files offline, download them to your device.


Browse files in your workspace

From your desktop, you can browse files added to any public channels and private channels or DMs you're a part of in your workspace. From the Slack iOS app, you can only browse files that you’ve added to your workspace.

  1. From your desktop, click  File browser at the top of your left sidebar. If you don’t see it, you can find it by clicking  More.
  2. Click   Filter in the top right corner.
  3. Filter your results by:

    File type to search for specific types of files.
    Shared by to search for files shared by a specific person.
    Shared in to search for files shared in a specific conversation.
    Date shared to search for files shared within a date range.
    Workspace to search for files shared in a specific workspace.
  1. From the   Home tab, swipe right to open the main menu.
  2. Tap Files to view files that you’ve added to your workspace.

Note: It's not possible to browse files from the Slack Android app at this time.


Share files in Slack

You can share a file that’s been added to Slack in a channel or DM. If the file was added with a message, you can choose to share the message that contains the file, or just the file itself.

  1. Hover over the message or the file itself.
  2. Click the   Share icon.
  3. Choose where to share the file and add a message, if you'd like.
  4. Click Share.

Tip: After you click the   Share icon, you’ll also see an option to copy a link to the message or file via the Copy Link button.

Share files outside of Slack

To share a file outside of Slack, you can create an external link. Here's what to expect:

  • For files shared in public channels, any member can create an external link.
  • For files shared in private channels, only the person who uploaded the file can create an external link.
  • The person who uploads a file can revoke its external link at any time.

Note: It’s not possible to create external links from Slack for any files stored in tools like Box, Google Drive, or OneDrive.

  1. From your desktop, hover over the file you'd like to create a link for.
  2. Click the  More actions icon.
  3. Select Create external link.
  4. Copy the link to your clipboard, then click Done.

  3. Select View external link.
  4. Click Revoke, then click Revoke It.

Note: If you don’t see the option to create an external link for a file uploaded to Slack, a Workspace Owner or Admin may have disabled this feature.


Download files from your workspace

If you’d like to any view files in Slack offline, you can download them to your desktop. On your mobile device, you can only download image files.

Note: It’s not possible to download files from Slack that are stored in file management tools, like Box, Google Drive, or OneDrive.

  1. From your desktop, hover over the file you'd like to download.
  2. Click the    download icon.

When your file starts to download, you'll see a notification in the bottom-right corner of Slack. Click the file name to open the file. To show the file in your computer's Finder or Explorer, press Shift as you click the file name.

  1. Tap the image you'd like to save.
  2. Tap the  three dots icon.
  3. Tap Save Image.

  3. Tap Download.


View all downloads

To view a list of files you've downloaded from Slack on your desktop, follow the steps below:

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Downloads from the menu.

When you hover over a file, you can choose to open it, show it in your computer's Finder or Explorer, or clear the download.

Tip: You can clear all your downloads by clicking the   clear downloads icon at the top of the Downloads window.


Manage your default download location

You can change your default location for downloading files from Slack on your desktop at any time.

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Advanced.
  4. Under Download location, click Change and select your preference.
