Slack for human resources

For a company to do its best work, it needs an HR team equipped to do theirs. Keep reading to learn some ways that HR teams can use Slack to support employees.

Why use Slack for HR?

  • Streamline onboarding and create a resource destination for all employees.
  • Increase transparency with public discussions whenever possible.
  • Bolster company culture with social channels and visible recognition.

Streamline new hire onboarding

Create a #new-employees channel with all the information new employees need. This creates a safe place for new starters to ask questions, explore and get up to speed. Pin messages and files that set out your company mission and policies. Invite company leaders and other helpful contacts to join and welcome employees.

Try creating a unique channel for each new batch of employees (e.g. #newemployees-oct18). This is where you can set reminders for new starters to submit documents and register for benefits. Keep these channels private to provide a sense of community for each group.

Create a resource destination

Keeping everyone informed of important policies and updates is no easy feat. You might have a mix of full-timers, contractors and people in different countries. Create separate #benefits channels so employees can find their relevant HR info.

Use posts to create HR and benefits FAQs and pin them to their related channel. This sends out a message of transparency to your team and enables them to answer their own questions. When you update your FAQs, notify employees by commenting on the post or making an announcement.

Increase transparency

If employees can’t find what they’re looking for in Slack, encourage them to ask in public channels. Unless a topic is sensitive, answering questions in public channels helps everyone learn, saves time and makes info searchable!

Use the channel purpose to set expectations for the channel. Describe the info they can find and give an estimated response time for questions.

Recognise good (team)work

Create a #kudos channel for employees to give a shout-out for all sorts of successes. Public recognition goes a long way in helping employees feel valued and engaged. 👏

Install a third-party app such as Growbot to send and measure kudos over time. This may come in handy when it’s time for performance reviews.

Foster team culture

Create a #culture channel for discussing your company’s culture over time. This serves as a safe space to discuss team values, ask questions and share ideas to improve morale. You can also try a third-party app like Leo to routinely measure employee satisfaction, rather than just collecting feedback a couple of times a year.

Encourage employees to create and join affinity channels to connect with colleagues outside their immediate team. These groups should be open to everyone – #foodies, #surfing, #music, you name it!
