Start a direct message with someone outside your company

Slack Connect allows you to send direct messages (DMs) to people outside your company, providing an easy way to work with your partners. Once an invitation has been sent and accepted, you can begin exchanging messages with someone from another organization, just like you would in other DMs.

What to expect

Tip: If you’re already working in channels with people outside your company, you can DM them without sending an invitation.

Send a DM invitation

If you’re using Slack on a paid plan, you can send a DM invitation using the steps below. Invitations include a unique link that can be used by one person, and should only be shared with people you trust.

Mobile

  1. Click the  compose button next to your workspace name in the top left.
  2. In the To: field, enter the email address for the person you’d like to invite.
  3. Select  Start a direct message from the menu.
  4. Click Send Invitation.
  1. From the  Home tab, tap the  compose button at the bottom of your screen.
  2. Select  DM someone from another company from the menu.
  3. Tap Share to send an invitation.

Accept a DM invitation

On any Slack plan, you can accept a DM invitation using the steps below.

Desktop

  1. Open the invitation and click View Invitation.
  2. Choose the Slack account you’d like to use for this DM. If you don't see your preferred account, click Sign in to another account.
  3. Click Start Conversation.

  2. Choose the Slack account you’d like to use for this DM. If you don't see your preferred account, tap Sign in to another account.
  3. Tap Start Conversation.

Once you've accepted an invitation, you can start exchanging messages right away. You can end the conversation at any time you'd like.

Stop DM invitations from specific people

If you receive a DM invitation from someone you don’t want to hear from, you can choose to stop getting future Slack Connect invitations from that person.

Desktop

Mobile

  1. Open the invitation.
  2. Below the invitation details, click Stop getting invitations.
  3. Click Stop Invitations.
  1. Open the invitation.
  2. Below the invitation details, tap Stop getting invitations.
  3. Tap Stop Invitations.

This will apply to any Slack Connect invitations sent from a Slack account associated with that person’s email address, and the person you stop invitations from won’t be notified. To undo this action, you’ll need to contact us.

There are a few options for restricting Slack Connect invitations your team receives. Reach out to an owner or admin and ask for help.

Note: It’s against Slack’s Acceptable Use Policy to send unsolicited communications, promotions or advertisements, or spam.
