Depending on how many people you want to alert, you have a few options to make an announcement in Slack. 📣
These options won't notify anyone who has
paused notifications with Do Not Disturb. We suggest using @here, @channel, and @everyone sparingly. If you need to get an individual’s attention, you can simply @mention them.
Tip: To notify a specific group of members, try creating a user group. (Available on the Standard plan and above.)
Note: These mentions won't send a notification when used in threads.
@everyone can only be used in your workspace-wide channel, which starts out as #general. Include @everyone in your message to trigger a desktop and mobile notification for all members of the channel — i.e., everyone in your workspace — whether they are active or away.
When to use @everyone
Remind the whole office that there will be a private event in the cafe space.
Tell your organization about the new vacation policy.
Alert everyone in the company about the emergency evacuation drill.
Note: By default, Guests are not able to use @everyone.
@here when you only need the attention of people who are actively working in any channel that you're a member of. It's perfect for when you don't want to bother anyone who's unavailable.
When to use @here
You're locked out of the office and need help from someone already at work.
Schedule an impromptu event for people who are present, like a lunch outing.
Get a question answered quickly by teammates who are actively working.
Note: To avoid extra disturbance, @here will only trigger a badge notification on the desktop icon and the channel list if you're actively working in Slack. Also, it won't appear listed in your Activity.
@channel to let everyone in a channel know about your timely, relevant information. This will trigger a desktop and mobile alert for all channel members, whether active or away.
When to use @channel
Update a project team's channel about a last-minute change in deadlines.
Let members know when you change a channel structure or work process.
Introduce a new employee or cross-functional partner to a channel.
Tip: When you use @channel or @everyone in a channel with at least six members, Slack will ask you to confirm your message before you send. Workspace Owners can turn this warning off.
Settings and permissions
By default, all members can use @channel and @here mentions. Workspace Owners can always
change this setting.
On the Enterprise Grid plan, @mentions work differently for large channels. In channels with more than 10,000 members, only Workspace Owners and Admins can use @channel and @here.
Note: Your workspace may limit the use of @everyone to Owners and Admins only. If so, only Owners and Admins can use @channel and @here in the #general channel.
Bot messages: To notify members with a bot message, the message must contain <!channel> or <!everyone>.
