Multi-Channel and Single-Channel Guests

Some people in your Slack workspace — like contractors, interns, or clients — may only need access to certain channels. Workspace Owners and Admins can invite these people as a Multi-Channel or Single-Channel Guest.

  • Multi-Channel Guests can join more than one channel of your choosing.
  • Single-Channel Guests can join only one channel you've specified.

Tip: You can send members of external organizations an invitation to share a channel without adding them to your workspace as guests.

 

Billing for guest accounts

Guest accounts are available only on paid plans (Standard, Plus, and Enterprise Grid) and can be either Multi-Channel or Single-Channel.

  • Multi-Channel Guests have access to only the channels you specify. They're billed as regular members and can be added to an unlimited number of channels.
  • Single-Channel Guests are free and can only access one channel. For every paid active member in your workspace, you can add up to 5 guests. For example, if you have 10 members, you can invite up to 50 Single-Channel Guests!

 

Add a guest to your workspace

📨  Invite a new guest

Workspace Owners and Admins can invite Multi-Channel or Single-Channel Guests to a workspace. Members can request invitations for guests. Learn more about invitations.

Note: It's not possible to add a guest to a private channel that you're not a member of. Workspace members can invite Multi-Channel Guests to private channels, even if they don't have workspace invitation permissions.

⏰  Set a deactivation time for guest accounts

Workspace Owners and Admins can determine how long guests will have access to a workspace. You can do the following:

  • Automatically deactivate a guest account after a certain amount of time
  • Set a custom deactivation date and time
  • Allow an account to have access indefinitely

Two days before deactivation, the guest and the Owner or Admin who set the date will get a reminder message from Slackbot. The Owner or Admin can choose to extend the time limit if needed.

Note: Multi-Channel Guest accounts with a time limit are still billed like regular members. If they're only active during a portion of your workspace's billing cycle, we'll deposit prorated credits to your account.

 

Manage a guest’s channels

Guests must be invited to join channels. Here’s how to manage which channels a guest has access to in your workspace:

  1. From your desktop, click your workspace name in the top left.
  2. Select Settings & administration, then click Manage members.
  3. Click the  three dots icon to the right of the member you wish to edit.
  4. For a Single-Channel Guest, click Edit info and change their current channel. For Multi-Channel Guests, click Edit info and select the channels they’ll have access to, or click the x icon next to a channel they’re in to remove them.

Tip: Multi-Channel Guests have a  square activity indicator next to their names, while Single-Channel Guests have a  triangle icon.

 

View guest profiles in your workspace directory

When you add a guest account to your workspace, a new profile will auto-populate in your directory with the following information:

  • Which Workspace Owner or Admin invited the guest
  • Which channel(s) the guest has access to
  • If a time limit is set, the date a guest account will be deactivated


View a guest's profile

  1. From your desktop, click   People in the left sidebar.
  2. Enter a guest’s name, display name, job title, or email address in the Search field, or select Guests from the Account type drop-down menu to browse all guests.
  3. Click the guest’s profile picture to open the profile and view more options.

Note: Guest profile fields aren't available for mobile apps.

Note: A guest can only initiate a direct message (DM) with a member who's in the same channel(s). But a member can initiate a DM with any guest, even if they're not in the same channel.
